Looking forward to 2023, there are many exciting tipping points that can accelerate action across golf.
2023 will see the industry step four years into the UN Decade of Action for sustainable development, and the Decade of Restoration for Nature. That’s also only six years away from the 50% reduction in direct carbon emissions that is being called for to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
It’s a bit like being 4 down at the 8th. Not a great place to be. However, the round is not over yet, and our game is building…
All those who live, work and play in golf have the opportunity to turn the tide on the parallel problems of climate change and loss of nature.
We need to seize the moment, build on growing momentum and step forward as a low carbon, high ecosystem sport and land use. A sector that, over the coming years, can proudly claim to be the sport that did the most, when it was most needed.
We have all the assets. The natural and semi-natural spaces. Leaders and workforce typically committed to making a positive impact. The technologies and wisdom to overcome even some of the biggest challenges around resource use. An intimate connection with local communities in over 39,000 locations in over 200 countries. The players and the platform to inspire millions of people - to get them to care about the world we have and take action towards the world we need.
Let’s make this next phase in golf’s sustainability journey the one where all leaders set ambitious and compelling strategies. Where support for clubs, developments and tournaments is scaled, so they can fully integrate nature, resources, communities and climate into their decision making. Where impacts are monitored and measured consistently using custom built Sustainable Golf Indicators. Where advocacy is authentic and communications credible.
For our part, the dedicated team at GEO Foundation will continue to do what we can to help support the acceleration of sustainability in and through golf. To be there as a dependable ‘caddy’, with golf and society’s best interests at heart. To help drive the change that golf is capable of, will benefit from, and which the world badly needs.
