Sustainable golf in Switzerland - a look back on the Omega European Masters

As the Omega European Masters works towards its objective of becoming a GEO Certified Tournament, this year’s event had several sustainable golf initiatives.

GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf and The Shift have worked together with the tournament organizers to strengthen its commitment in line with Swiss Golf's ambition and sustainable development vision.

Below are just some of the sustainability highlights from the Omega European Masters 2021 across the themes of fostering nature, conserving resources, taking climate action and strengthening communities.

  • Looking after the natural environment

The picturesque surroundings of Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre help to make the event an absolute favorite on the European Tour calendar for golfers and spectators alike.

As well as adopting a policy of naturalization on parts of the course to reduce maintenance inputs, significant tree planting has taken place, and this year’s tournament eliminated over 50,000 plastic bottles by introducing water fountains for refillable bottles.

All of these things combine to help protect and maintain a wonderful natural environment where nature can thrive.

  • Conserving resources in catering

Intending to become a zero-waste event in the next two years, the Omega European Masters is keen to promote the circular economy. For example, catering furniture has been reused for multiple events, and reusable tableware is deployed across the event.

There’s also a commitment to using local produce wherever possible to minimize the event's carbon footprint while providing fans with a flavor of what the area has to offer and supporting the neighboring economy.

  • Climate action comes to the fore

The 2021 tournament is the first where its carbon footprint will be calculated. This will ensure the event can evaluate its impact and implement specific reduction programmes in future years.

The event has also contributed to installing the electricity network along the golf course, which has reduced the reliance on generators drastically. The tournament also ensures a green energy supply via Energies Sion Region (ESR).

  • An inclusive approach to the local community

As a responsible event, the Omega European Masters is also making great progress in local community initiatives. Reducing emissions in the area is just one of these. The tournament’s transport strategy covers a range of options, including the funicular from Sierre to Crans-Montana. In Crans-Montana itself, free shuttle buses operate every 15 minutes. And on the course, all golf carts are electric to reduce pollution.

The organizers are keen for the tournament to be as inclusive as possible. Measures include free entry for under-18s and a new dedicated viewing area for those with reduced mobility, providing a fantastic view from the top of the stand on the 13th hole.

These featured initiatives are just a snapshot of the sustainable golf practices at the tournament and host venue. There are already many plans being considered for the 2022 event to make it even more sustainable.

A collaborative approach involving all stakeholders from GEO, The Shift and Swiss Golf to the European Tour and the club will enable next year’s event to further establish its place as a leader in sustainable sporting events.
