Sustainable golf high on the agenda at BTME

The BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) returned to the Harrogate Convention Centre after a two-year hiatus in March, and thanks to a partnership between BIGGA and GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, sustainability was high on the agenda including the creation of a Sustainability Lounge at the exhibition.

Alongside GEO Foundation, the space was hosted by a number of other golf bodies including The R&A, England Golf and Wales Golf, with experts from around the UK on hand throughout the week.

It allowed those from the sustainable golf community and beyond to come together and exchange ideas during the event, which attracts turf managers, suppliers and industry leaders from all over the world.

The lounge also provided a dedicated area for attendees to find out more about the support and recognition programs available and join discussions about key sustainability issues with experts in their field.

“From our point of view, the sustainability lounge was a success because it gave us such an insight into the incredible sustainability work that is being carried out within the UK,” said Owen James, Sustainability Officer at England Golf.

“Being such a new team, and such a new area of work for England Golf, having the opportunity to chat with golf club managers, greenkeepers and greens chairs at such a positive event was a great way for us to build a bank of contacts, to utilize as case studies and share best practice from.

“It was also great for us to introduce ourselves in person, and allow people the opportunity to get our details, so they can come to us for advice in the future.”

Ed Syers, Social Media Manager, GEO Foundation was attending his first BTME event:

“This was my first opportunity to catch up with many industry professionals face-to-face. It was a great experience to learn more about the range of work being undertaken to advance sustainable golf worldwide.

“The commitment of so many greenkeepers, club managers and golf bodies was inspiring. I’m looking forward to recognizing and celebrating more successes to encourage others to step forward and play their part.”

BTME is Europe's leading exhibition for turf professionals and buyers and attracts thousands of turf managers and golf club managers, making it an important space in which to further engage and grow the sustainable golf community.
