A bright future in Sustainable Golf Developments

It has been a significant year in terms of sustainable golf and sustainable golf development, with an increase in the number of developments looking for help and setting out with sustainability at the forefront of their ethos.

Excellent examples of this include the Marey development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Cuatro Cienegas in Coahuila, Mexico, both of which have recently started working with GEO Foundation.

The two developments have shown encouraging commitment to sustainability, leading to optimism that they can push the boundaries of sustainable golf development and become global leaders in this field. GEO Foundation will work closely with both developments through the design and construction phases, ensuring they are carried out to the highest standards of sustainability.

Both Maray and Cuatro Cienegas have shown huge potential to create not only a sustainable and special golf destination but to also give back to the local environment and communities in a real and meaningful way. And amid a noticeable shift towards sustainable development, it is vital that the achievements of those who have been pioneering this attitude with GEO Foundation through the years is recognised, as is the success they have reached.

Two other developments achieving GEO Certified Development status this year were New Craigend Golf Course, which is part of Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland, and Rumanza Golf and Country Club in Pakistan. Both clubs worked with GEO Foundation for several years, from the design stage through to the opening day, to ensure that the golf course was designed and built in the most sustainable way possible. These golf facilities become the seventh and eighth developments certified by the GEO Foundation since the first in 2015.

“It is immensely satisfying to see these two great courses achieve GEO Certification,” said Sam Thomas, Director of Golf Development at the GEO Foundation. “Having worked with them over the years we know the hard work that the design and construction teams have put into these developments, and it is great to see this appropriately recognised.”

Everyone at the GEO Foundation would like to congratulate these developments on their achievement, and for actively leading the field in sustainable golf development across the globe.
