GEO Certified

Through becoming GEO Certified we have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.  The international certification was earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating our commitment to make sustainability of central importance to our golf facility.  We're proud of our social and environmental value - and looking forward to doing even more on our sustainability journey.

Notable Observations

  • Restoring Coastal Dune Habitat The club is actively restoring rough areas back to their original dune and links character. This work reflects the course’s setting within the Yyteri coastal landscape, where dunes and peninsula habitats are a defining feature.
  • Natura 2000 Landscape Stewardship Parts of the course fall within the protected Yyteri Dunes Natura 2000 area. Tree cutting is restricted, and management focuses on protecting the sensitive dune environment and associated habitats.
  • Rich Coastal Birdlife The course supports varied birdlife, including wading birds, ducks, gulls, terns and migrating Arctic birds. Notable species recorded include osprey, black woodpecker, Eurasian golden plover, common crane, whooper swan, velvet scoter, black scoter and common eider.
  • Organic Turf Management Shift The course has moved to exclusive use of organic fertilisers and biostimulants. This change is part of a wider turf management approach focused on improving soil organic carbon, turf quality and resilience.
  • Recycled Pond Water Irrigation Irrigation water is sourced from ponds on the course. Water not taken up by plants or lost to evaporation runs back into the ponds, keeping irrigation water within the site system.
  • Solar Energy Generation Solar panels have been installed on the maintenance hall roof and produce a significant amount of energy. The club is also evaluating electrically powered robotic lawn mowers.
  • Free Junior Golf Access Under 16s can attend the Green Card course for free. The club also works with local schools, offering special days where students can try golf at no cost.
  • Community Recreation and Charity Events Yyteri Golf is used for wider recreation, including birdwatching, winter ski tracks when snow allows, clubhouse use and low-cost sauna access. The club also hosts charitable events, including End Polio Now and the LC Sofia Good Will Game.
