Notable Observations

  • Large-Scale Native Habitat Areas 63 acres are managed as native areas, receiving no mowing, irrigation, or turf inputs. These areas provide wildlife habitat and reduce maintenance intensity.
  • Naturalised Waste Bunkers Former bunkers have been converted into natural waste areas using crushed granite and native grasses, reducing sand use and ongoing maintenance.
  • Extensive Wildlife Presence The site supports a wide range of wildlife, including alligators, migratory birds, raptors, deer, turtles, and snakes. Nesting infrastructure includes six birdhouses and an owl box already in place.
  • Targeted Irrigation Only on Playing Surfaces Irrigation is restricted to essential playing areas only, supported by turf selection, calibrated sprinklers, and closely regulated schedules.
  • Weather-Driven Water Management Three weather stations and four rain gauges inform irrigation decisions, allowing watering to respond directly to rainfall, soil moisture, and forecasts.
  • Reduced Turf Footprint Managed turf areas have been deliberately limited, with greens, tees, fairways and practice areas clearly defined to minimise mowing, water, and input demand.
  • Long-Running Charity Impact Through Tournament Golf The Zurich Classic of New Orleans has raised approximately USD 51 million for charity, with around USD 38 million generated since the tournament moved to the site in 2005.
  • Education Through First Green and School Partnerships The facility hosts First Green STEAM education events and works directly with local schools, using the course as a living classroom for soil science, water management, and turf equipment learning.
“

“TPC Louisiana in Avondale, LA USA (New Orleans) is truly an attestation to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices throughout the golf course property, incorporating elements such as drought tolerant grasses, sustainable irrigation practices, strategic programs to promote golfing awareness, and implementing various initiatives to help combat plastic wastes and environmental protection. The golf course maintenance team exhibits professionalism and supports being responsible for creating and maintaining a better environment on and around the course. And the entire club team demonstrates professionalism, cooperation, effective communication skills, and an obvious passion for the environment, their profession, the club, the members, the community and their colleagues. Long-tenured staff is indicative of the level of dedication and respect of each employee for the golf course and the environment. I look forward to seeing continued and expanded success throughout the facility with energy conservation; habitat renewal, encouragement, protection and signage; and expanded use of collegiate internships and university test plots on site.”
