• Habitat Management Through Traditional Practices Roughs and heathland areas are managed through grazing by sheep, supported by native wildflower seeding, brush piles and deadwood habitats, and around 60 bird boxes installed across the course.
• Water Sensitive Landscape Management Rainwater from buildings and parking areas is captured and directed into on site ponds, which are used for irrigation. A central pond system, supported by additional planned storage, underpins a move towards water neutral operations.
• Advanced and Efficient Irrigation Systems A computer controlled irrigation system delivers water based on location specific needs and weather conditions, ensuring precise and efficient application across the course.
• Low Input Turf Management Plant sap analysis is carried out every few weeks to guide precise fertilisation, supported by annual soil testing and the use of biostimulants on greens. Non chemical approaches include nematodes for pest control and daily dew removal to reduce disease pressure.
• Electric and Robotic Maintenance Fleet A growing proportion of maintenance machinery is electric, with the club positioned as a leader in robotic mowing to reduce energy use and operational inputs.
• Sustainable Food and Local Sourcing The restaurant prioritises seasonal, locally sourced produce, incorporates ingredients harvested from the course such as wild garlic, and minimises food waste through menu design and sourcing decisions.
• Opening the Course to the Community A public walking route runs through the course, the restaurant is open to non-members, and the club is increasingly building relationships with local groups and organisations.
• Education and Collaboration with Local Partners The club works closely with water authorities, nature organisations and environmental students, with students actively contributing to projects across the course.

“The Duke is a beautifully located golf course, set within an historic woodland and heathland landscape, complemented by an equally impressive clubhouse, restaurant, and hotel. After many years of operating with a more closed approach, the club is increasingly opening up, allowing more non-members to experience how it contributes to nature. The course is also rich in cultural heritage, featuring a Moluccan memorial with an ice cellar, impressive veteran trees, and traces of an old church path. A great deal of effort is being invested in continually enhancing the course, with dedicated greenkeepers showing a strong awareness of opportunities to support flora and fauna.
