Through becoming GEO Certified we have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.  The international certification was earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating our commitment to make sustainability of central importance to our golf facility.  We're proud of our social and environmental value - and looking forward to doing even more on our sustainability journey.

Notable Observations

  • Protected Dune Habitats Conserved The course sits partly within the Comporta–Galé Site of Community Importance and actively protects priority dune habitats (2150*, 2250*, 2260), with strict non-intervention areas maintained and monitored under the approved Environmental Impact Statement.
  • 254-Hectare Compensation Area Managed A dedicated 254-hectare environmental compensation area is actively managed for habitat conservation and restoration, extending biodiversity responsibility well beyond the golf footprint.
  • Turf Reduced by One-Third Managed turf has been reduced from 45 ha in 2021 to 31 ha in 2024 through re-naturalisation between tees, bunker removal and fairway redesign, lowering inputs while strengthening landscape integration.
  • Advanced Data-Driven Irrigation System Irrigation decisions are guided by IrriSAT, POGO Turf Pro sensors, soil probes and an on-site weather station, all integrated with Toro Lynx control and variable-speed pumps for precise water and energy use.
  • Covered Water Storage Tanks Irrigation water is stored in covered tanks, reducing evaporation, preventing contamination and improving overall water efficiency in a hot, coastal environment.
  • On-Site Solar Power for Operations Photovoltaic panels (160 kVA) installed on maintenance buildings and irrigation tanks supply renewable electricity for pumping and operations, directly reducing grid demand.
  • Open Pay-and-Play Access The facility operates on a pay-and-play basis, with no membership requirement, ensuring open and equitable access rather than restricted private use.
  • Strong Local Community Support The operation provides direct support to local organisations, including sports clubs and volunteer fire brigades, demonstrating active engagement with the surrounding community.

“The Dunas Golf Course has established a solid foundation in environmental management and legal compliance. The integration of renewable energy, advanced irrigation control and nature-positive land management practices demonstrates a credible and forward-looking sustainability approach. Given the ongoing development phase, several sustainability initiatives are still maturing. Key opportunities for further improvement include the formalization of policies (such as sustainable procurement), enhanced monitoring and data consolidation (including sector-specific metering and waste metrics), and the continued expansion of circular practices, notably composting and the use of alternative water sources. As operations progress, there is also clear scope to strengthen transparency, communication and community engagement through more structured sustainability reporting, educational initiatives and stakeholder involvement.
