GEO Certified

Through becoming GEO Certified we have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.  The international certification was earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating our commitment to make sustainability of central importance to our golf facility.  We're proud of our social and environmental value - and looking forward to doing even more on our sustainability journey.

Notable Observations

  • Supporting a Major Migratory Bird Flyway The course is located on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, directly opposite the Jiuduansha Wetland National Nature Reserve. Migratory waterfowl spend the winter in the area, and numerous species, including mallards, Chinese spot-billed ducks, northern pintails and egrets, have been recorded.
  • Preserving Undeveloped Habitat An undeveloped parcel of land has been retained within the golf course and left undisturbed. This area provides natural habitat while maintaining the ecological character of the site.
  • Research-Led Landscape Management A detailed site survey was completed in 2025 to inform future habitat and landscape management. The club also considers landscape value, seasonal suitability, cultivation experience and maintenance requirements when selecting plant species across the course.
  • Low-Carbon Turf Research Centre The club has established the Evergreen Lawn Research Centre to study low-carbon turf management. Fertiliser applications are carefully calculated and timed to improve nutrient uptake while reducing runoff losses.
  • Precision Water Management Long-term climate records, turf water requirement studies and irrigation trials have been used to develop precision irrigation techniques for the course. Soil moisture is monitored using a Spectrum TDR350 meter, supported by a staff-designed soil sampling tool to guide irrigation decisions.
  • Circular Management of Course Materials Around 20,000 square metres of fairway were removed during the 2025 course upgrade to reduce maintenance inputs. Sand recovered during construction is sieved and reused for ongoing course maintenance, while grass clippings and wood chips are sent to a biomass power plant operated by the parent company.
  • Celebrating Golf Heritage The club is home to the Shanghai Links Golf Museum, which documents the development of golf in Shanghai over the past century. Together with a local coffee shop, it creates a destination that combines golf, culture and recreation.
  • Investing in Junior Golf and Community Programmes The club supports a wide range of community initiatives, including hosting the Shanghai Junior Golf Interschool Competition, sponsoring the HSBC Junior Golf Programme, participating in the Shanghai Golf Club Charity Tour and organising family events with the local residential community.
