Notable Observations

  • Protected Dune Habitats and SSSI Stewardship Royal Birkdale sits within a legally protected Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and manages a mix of dune, grassland, and scrub habitats. The team maintains up-to-date maps and works closely with Natural England to support rare species.
  • Practical Conservation for Key Species Conservation zones support sand lizards, skylarks, and other priority species. Measures include seasonal access restrictions and tailored habitat work to protect breeding and feeding areas.
  • Reduced Turf, More Natural Areas Out-of-play turf has been removed to encourage naturalisation and expand habitat. Traffic patterns are monitored to guide further reductions, helping biodiversity and cutting inputs.
  • Smart Water Management Water use is tightly controlled through drought-tolerant turf species, essential-only irrigation, and a licensed abstraction system. Staff use weather data and soil moisture levels to guide efficient irrigation.
  • 25% Renewable Energy from Solar Solar panels on the clubhouse and maintenance buildings generated a quarter of the site’s electricity in 2023. The club continues to explore further on-site renewables.
  • Closed-Loop Washdown System The greenkeeping compound includes impermeable wash areas with oil separation and a closed-loop cleaning system. Solids are collected by a licensed contractor, preventing pollution.
  • Charity Events and Local Partnerships The club supports local and national causes through charity golf days and donations. It also engages with community groups and conservation partners for mutual benefit.
  • Visible, Ongoing Sustainability Communication Environmental efforts are shared through internal boards, e-bulletins, and website updates. On-course signage helps inform members about actions like habitat conservation and water efficiency.
