Notable Observations

  • Course-Wide Wildlife and Avifauna Baseline In 2024, a comprehensive wildlife and bird survey was completed across the entire course by specialist biologist Sergio Tirado (Golf & Birds). The study recorded 70 bird species across 38 families and 4,209 individual birds, establishing a quantified baseline for biodiversity management.
  • Ecological Corridor Managed Using Survey Evidence Survey results confirmed that wildlife is primarily established in inter-hole areas and around water bodies, particularly between holes 6 and 7. These areas are intentionally managed to maintain habitat continuity across the course.
  • Permanent Non-Irrigated Areas Locked In by Design A major irrigation renovation in 2016 established a fixed hard irrigation line, leaving approximately 1.2 hectares permanently outside irrigation coverage, embedding long-term turf reduction into the course layout.
  • No Winter Overseeding on Bermuda Turf The club does not carry out winter overseeding on any Bermuda areas. The report explicitly links this practice to an estimated 25% reduction in CO₂ emissions, alongside reduced water, fertiliser and energy inputs.
  • Multi-Layer Soil Moisture and ET Control Irrigation decisions are guided by daily TDR soil moisture readings, buried moisture sensors (Hydroball and Agrodis), and two on-site weather stations, allowing precise adjustment based on real-time soil and evapotranspiration data.
  • Gravity-Fed Irrigation System The irrigation system operates using gravity rather than energy-intensive pumping, maintaining constant pressure across the course while reducing energy demand.
  • Sustainability Embedded in Club Governance The Head Greenkeeper sits on the Board of Directors, and sustainability is discussed at every board meeting alongside the Course Committee and Managing Director. Sustainability objectives are presented annually to members and integrated into planning.
  • Annual Charity Tournament for Cáritas The club organises an annual charity tournament in support of Cáritas, including a “zero row” option to enable voluntary donations, providing a clear and recurring mechanism for community support.
“

“The Real Club de Golf Sotogrande demonstrates a mature, fully integrated sustainability strategy. Biodiversity management is supported by a long-term wildlife monitoring programme, positioning the course as an ecological corridor guided by measurable outcomes. Water stewardship is evidenced through the use of reclaimed water, climate-appropriate turfgrass selection, reduced irrigated surfaces, and the elimination of winter overseeding. In addition, a highly efficient, data-driven irrigation approach—supported by soil moisture monitoring and on-site weather stations—guides daily decision-making and helps reduce water use, energy consumption, and associated carbon inputs. The Club continues to invest in renewable energy, electric machinery, and circular resource management, while ensuring full legal compliance, staff training, and responsible operational practices. Sustainability objectives are embedded in governance, tournament operations, and community engagement, reflecting strong alignment with GEO Certification principles and a commitment to continuous improvement.”
