We are committed to social and environmental responsibility, in and through golf.

GEO Certified

Through becoming GEO Certified we have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.  The international certification was earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating our commitment to make sustainability of central importance to our golf facility.  We're proud of our social and environmental value - and looking forward to doing even more on our sustainability journey.

Notable Observations

  • Extensive Wildlife and Habitat Surveying An extensive landscape, habitat and wildlife survey was recently completed in connection with plans for a new 9-hole course extension. Local fauna recorded on site includes beavers, swans and terns.
  • Forest Stewardship with Volunteer Support Around 40% of the site consists of forested areas that are largely maintained in a natural state in collaboration with the City of Oulu. Woodland management is also supported by a volunteer group known as Metsäveljet, or “The Forest Brothers”.
  • River Protection and Bird Nest Safeguarding The banks of the Sanginjoki River are protected by approximately five-metre buffer zones along the course. Specific tern nesting areas are protected, while swans and ducks nesting on site are given priority access around the facility.
  • Major Reduction in Electricity Use The club has reduced electricity consumption by 50,000 kWh over the past four years. Key contributors include an on-site solar power plant and around 20 air source heat pumps.
  • Electrified and Robotic Maintenance Fleet Diesel greens mowers have been replaced with three electric and one hybrid mower. Following successful trials, robotic fairway mowing is now planned to further reduce fossil fuel use.
  • Advanced Irrigation Control Systems Rainbird irrigation software is used alongside individual sprinkler control and sector sprinklers to optimise irrigation. Moisture levels are also monitored manually during the season to support water management decisions.
  • Awarded “Golf Community of the Year” Oulun Golf was recently awarded “Golf Community of the Year” by the Finnish Golf Union. The award recognised the club’s social focus, membership growth and support for junior golf.
  • Comprehensive ESG Responsibility Reporting The club has produced a comprehensive responsibility report covering environmental, social and governance topics. The report follows the VSME reporting standard.
