Notable Observations

  • Support for Biodiversity More than half of the 137-hectare site is managed as habitat, with 72.5 hectares supporting an estimated 591 recorded species. Records include notable birds such as Red Kite, Barn Owl, Hobby, Kingfisher and Cuckoo, alongside the milestone of the 450th moth species recorded in March 2026.
  • Heathland Restoration The Hotchkin Course is a designated SSSI and has undergone substantial long-term heathland restoration in partnership with Natural England. Around 90,000 m² of scrub and approximately 10,000 trees were removed to restore heathland, heather and historic landscape features, with the resulting habitats continuing to be actively managed and monitored.
  • Evidence-Led Turf Management Turf management combines resilient grass selection, soil testing, targeted nutrition, precision irrigation and integrated pest management. Routine scouting, hotspot monitoring, calibrated equipment and precision application techniques help maintain high-quality playing surfaces while reducing unnecessary chemical intervention.
  • Precision Water Management The course used 20,447 m³ of surface water from onsite reservoirs for irrigation, reducing reliance on potable mains water. Irrigation is focused on essential playing surfaces and informed by soil moisture, weather and evapotranspiration data, alongside modern irrigation systems, regular audits and sensor technology.
  • Lower-Carbon Energy The Club purchases renewable electricity and uses an onsite-fuelled biomass boiler for heating at the maintenance facility. Electrification is also progressing across the fleet, with 12 electric golf carts and six electric ride-on or maintenance vehicles already in operation.
  • Waste and Circularity A detailed waste management system records 20,282 kg of waste, with 6,097 kg recycled and 14,185 kg sent for energy recovery, resulting in 100% diversion from landfill. Green waste is also reused through woodchipping, biomass, composting, soil reuse and habitat creation, while an onsite turf nursery reduces external sourcing and transport.
  • Inclusive Access and Participation The Club welcomed approximately 18,000 visitors alongside its 975 members and has achieved Women in Golf Charter status, with equal male and female representation in its main decision-making group. Community access extends beyond golf through the Viking Way, public rights of way, community use of facilities, the Golf Academy and growing junior and mixed-gender programmes.
  • Volunteering and Community Support The Club recorded around 750 volunteering hours, supported eight charitable events and eight charities, and raised approximately £27,500 for good causes during the reporting period. Supported organisations include Dementia UK and St Barnabas Hospice, alongside a wider network of local sporting, cultural, environmental and tourism partnerships.
