Notable observations

  • Protected Natural Areas: The course incorporates protected habitats, including a noble tree zone in Bodom Smets and rocky areas connected to the Nuuksio National Park. It also protects the birdlife-rich Lake Matalajärvi, which belongs to the Natura 2000 network.
  • Biodiversity Conservation: Habitat management includes annual reviews, leaving waterbody shores uncut during nesting, and planting native species like berry bushes. Efforts to combat invasive species such as lupine and knotweed further protect local ecosystems.
  • Water Efficiency: The club uses surface water from Lake Bodom under an unlimited permit, implements strict irrigation monitoring, and has reduced fairway areas while planting drought-resistant turf species.
  • Renewable Energy Use: Solar panels and ground heat pumps provide sustainable energy, producing 21,000 kWh per season. Forest maintenance waste is used as biomass energy, reducing dependency on non-renewable sources.
  • Public Accessibility: In winter, the course is open for skiing, dog walking, and mushroom foraging, promoting broader community use. Events and weddings hosted at the manor house enhance its role as a local social hub.
  • Community Engagement: The club actively participates in local conservation groups like the Lake Matalajärvi and Bodom Protection unions and organizes charitable events, including water quality monitoring.
“

The facility is well managed, clean, and modern. Big investments are made on ecology and awareness on ecological issues is high. There are plans to extend those plans, too. I look forward to seeing how the wider application of GPS systems will impact the course management performance in the future.
