Sustainable Golf Pledge

We are committed to social and environmental responsibility, in and through golf.

We recognize the importance of playing our part to protect and restore nature, conserve resources, take climate action and strengthen communities.

We will seek to use our reach to raise awareness and positive action amongst golfers, partners and the wider public.

We will make an important difference, and help golf become a valued leader in sustainability.

GEO Certified

Through becoming GEO Certified we have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.  The international certification was earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating our commitment to make sustainability of central importance to our golf facility.  We're proud of our social and environmental value - and looking forward to doing even more on our sustainability journey.

Notable Observations

  • Course Located Within a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) The entire facility sits inside an SAC with rich woodland, wetland, and lake habitats, giving it a nationally important ecological context.
  • Habitat Knowledge Supported by Biodiversity Audit The team has a strong, practical understanding of the site’s wildlife, supported by a Biodiversity Audit and daily interaction with the landscape.
  • No-Spray Buffer Zones Around Sensitive Habitats Killarney maintains chemical-free buffer zones around water, wetlands, and other ecological areas to prevent pollution and protect biodiversity.
  • Borehole-Fed Irrigation System All irrigation water comes from the club’s borehole system, reducing reliance on treated mains water. GEO_Certification_Report_Killar…
  • Targeted Irrigation Guided by Soil Moisture and Weather Watering is finely controlled using soil moisture observations and weather forecasts, ensuring the course is irrigated only when needed.
  • Upgrading the Lagoon to Promote Environmental Protection The club replaced creosote-treated railway sleepers around the lagoon with limestone and Liscannor stone, and used non-toxic polypropylene silt traps during construction to protect the water quality of Lough Leane.
  • Golf Equipment Reuse Initiative (2025) In 2025, the club partnered with Next to New Golf to host a major pre-loved equipment exchange and trade-in event, extending the life of hundreds of items and promoting circular consumption in golf.
  • Inclusive Membership and Community Support Membership policies explicitly prohibit discrimination, and the club raises funds for local charities through regular volunteering and fundraising programmes.
“

“Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is set within an area of outstanding natural beauty, overlooking the iconic Lakes of Killarney and framed by the majestic McGillicuddy Reeks. Just moments from the vibrant town of Killarney, the club’s two championship courses are maintained to an exceptional standard and celebrated for their natural harmony with the surrounding landscape. Home to an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna — including roaming wild deer and ancient specimen trees — the courses showcase a deep respect for nature. The club’s management team demonstrates a strong and ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing this rich biodiversity while continually working to minimise the environmental impact of course operations.”
