Notable Observations

  • Habitat Management: The club works with the Dominican Republic’s National Botanical Garden Association to identify and eliminate invasive species, replacing them with native species to enhance local biodiversity. Endangered flora and fauna are also monitored, with detailed records kept.
  • Turf and Water Efficiency: A course mapping audit led to a 5% reduction in managed turfgrass, with a goal to achieve 10-15%. This minimizes water use while supporting natural habitats.
  • Renewable Energy: A solar panel farm powers part of the club’s operations, reducing electricity use by 25%. Plans are underway to expand this capacity, targeting a 35% reduction in overall energy consumption.
  • Water Recycling: Half of the irrigation water comes from reclaimed sources within Iberostar resorts, reducing dependency on freshwater and promoting efficient resource use.
  • Community Engagement: The club organizes beach clean-ups and mangrove restoration initiatives involving local schools, resort staff, and volunteers. These activities strengthen ties with the local community and promote environmental stewardship.
  • Inclusivity and Youth Programs: The course is public, with 50% local usage alongside resort guests. Youth engagement programs encourage younger generations to take up golf.

Sustainability runs deep at the Iberostar Bávaro Golf Club and is also embraced by the 5 surrounding Iberostar Bávaro resorts. The resort, including the golf course, has eliminated single use plastics, installed a solar farm that includes expansion plans, established a recycling centre (Green Point) with the goal of zero emission to landfills, and was named the Dominican Republic’s best golf course two years running. Sustainability audits are performed every 2 years with action plans by the Director of Sustainability and team. The team at Iberostar should take great pride in what has already been accomplished and future plans and targets. True environmental leaders and stewards.
