We are committed to social and environmental responsibility, in and through golf.

We recognize the importance of playing our part to protect and restore nature, conserve resources, take climate action and strengthen communities.

We will seek to use our reach to raise awareness and positive action amongst golfers, partners and the wider public.

Notable observations

  • Fifth GEO Certification: Hirsala Golf has achieved its fifth GEO certification, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and serving as a role model for others.
  • Nature Surveys and Species Monitoring: Comprehensive nature surveys were conducted from 2018 to 2019, with ongoing updates to the mapping of flora and fauna on the golf course. This proactive approach ensures the protection of valuable species, including the Moor frog.
  • Collaboration with WWF: Hirsala Golf collaborates closely with WWF, having developed sustainable management guides for ponds and pollinator-friendly practices, both of which are publicly available through the Finnish Golf Association.
  • Energy Efficiency Innovations: Hirsala Golf has successfully reduced fuel consumption from 4,000 litres to 300 litres since 2020, largely due to robotic lawnmowers. Solar panels and heat pumps have been installed, making both the clubhouse and maintenance building self-sufficient for electricity during the summer.
  • Collaboration with Educational Institutions: Plans for a study on waterbodies in collaboration with Helsinki University and STERF aim to achieve climate-positive goals and complete carbon footprint calculations, showcasing Hirsala Golf's commitment to sustainability research and education.

Hirsala Golf is an exciting place for GEO verification and can be regarded as a benchmark in environmental and sustainability work. The club has many delightful achievements and ongoing projects on sustainability, including co-operation with several organisations. To become a climate positive club is an ambitious goal; yet, a lot of work has already been done to achieve it, with much more planned ahead. I look forward to seeing their progress!
