Notable observations

  • Habitat Management and Restoration: The golf park is situated on an old wetland with fertile organic soils, maintaining several water bodies which enhance biodiversity. Efforts include a maintenance plan on the 9-hole course and agreements for habitat upkeep with a local farmer.
  • Native and Habitat-Friendly Planting: While much of the landscape features native plants, there's a strong recommendation to use native species in all future landscaping. Notable new features include a wet meadow and flat gravel banks that were recently introduced.
  • Water and Irrigation Management: An efficient irrigation system (CirrusPRO) aligns with soil moisture data and weather patterns. Measures to improve water conservation, such as implementing water-saving faucets and better tracking usage data, are in progress.
  • Waste and Sustainable Procurement: Waste management is prioritised, with PET collection, composting, and reducing single-use plastics. They also incorporate locally sourced food and materials wherever possible.
  • Inclusivity and Community Access: Public pathways cross the golf park, creating an accessible recreational area, especially in the off-season. The restaurant is open to visitors, welcoming cyclists and hikers alike.
  • Health and Wellness Programs: Initiatives include Pilates, card games, golf lessons, and a yearly “Golf for Girls” program. These activities promote both physical and mental health.

Golfpark Otelfingen is very progressive in many areas and various highlights and best practice applications were identified. Of course, there are still numerous points where further improvements can be achieved. For instance, there were some concerns about the distance between some greens, tees and nearby bodies of water. Due to the exemplary commitment so far and the projects already planned, I am very confident that Golfpark Otelfingen will further continue to improve towards sustainable golf.
