Sustainable Golf Pledge

We are committed to social and environmental responsibility, in and through golf.

We recognize the importance of playing our part to protect and restore nature, conserve resources, take climate action and strengthen communities.

We will seek to use our reach to raise awareness and positive action amongst golfers, partners and the wider public.

We will make an important difference, and help golf become a valued leader in sustainability.

Through becoming GEO Certified we have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.  The international certification was earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating our commitment to make sustainability of central importance to our golf facility.  We're proud of our social and environmental value - and looking forward to doing even more on our sustainability journey.

Notable Observations

  • Extensive Nature Areas and Ecozones The 9-hole course comprises approximately 12 hectares of playing area alongside around 6 hectares of dedicated nature areas. Green ecozones have been established over many years, creating additional space for wildlife alongside golf.
  • Nature-Friendly Banks for Wildlife Several water bodies have been enhanced with nature-friendly banks designed to support plants and amphibians. These additions complement existing mowing and fertiliser buffer zones around many of the course’s water features.
  • Active Species Conservation Programme The club has installed nesting opportunities for species including kingfishers and starlings, while several bat boxes have recently been restored and renewed. Non-native red swamp crayfish are also being actively controlled to protect native wildlife.
  • Solar-Powered Maintenance Operations Solar panels have been installed on the maintenance and administrative building. Electric maintenance equipment and mowing machines are now powered using energy generated by these solar panels.
  • Transition to Electric Machinery The club has progressively introduced more electric maintenance equipment and mowing machinery. This has contributed to a reduction in fossil fuel consumption.
  • Precision Irrigation Based on Soil Monitoring Soil moisture levels on greens are measured weekly using a soil moisture sensor, with irrigation rates adjusted for each individual green. Fairways are only irrigated when absolutely necessary, reflecting the site's naturally high groundwater levels.
  • Expert-Led Nature Education Events The club organises annual bird and plant excursions for members and local residents, led by external specialists. Bat excursions are also held to help people learn more about local wildlife.
  • Extensive Nature Interpretation and Communication Information about habitats, species and nature projects is shared through course information boards, a large screen at the course entrance and a dedicated species booklet. The GEO committee also regularly communicates nature-related activities and developments to members.
“

“Golfclub Kagerzoom has been active with respect to GEO from 2013 onwards. In that period, the club and especially the GEO-team constantly improved the course in relation to maintenance and nature development. More recently, nature-friendly banks in several water bodies and eco-zones have been created. Solar panels have been installed, further reducing their carbon dioxide footprint. Also, during our discussions, it became clear that this is not the end of the line with respect to nature development and sustainability actions.”
