2016, 2020, 2025, for renewal 2030

Notable Observations

  • Large-Scale, Diverse Landscape The course covers approximately 150 hectares with a wide variety of soil types and landscape conditions. A detailed base map supports informed ecological management across this large and complex site.
  • Ecological Work Protocol for Protected Species Protected species, including badger, are present on site. Since 2020, an ecological work protocol has guided timing of works, precautionary measures, and correct driving routes to avoid disturbance.
  • Hedgerows, Grasslands and Wildlife Tunnels Around 5 kilometres of hedgerows, several hectares of species-rich grassland, and dedicated wildlife tunnels support safe movement and habitat for badgers and other fauna. Badger activity is monitored using wildlife cameras.
  • Groundwater-Fed Irrigation with Reduced Use Greens, tees and fairways are irrigated using groundwater under permit. Average groundwater use has fallen by around 15% in recent years, with consumption reported annually to the Province of Gelderland.
  • Soil-Moisture-Guided Irrigation Soil moisture is measured before irrigation takes place, ensuring water is only applied when needed and improving overall irrigation efficiency.
  • Energy Demand Reduced Through Modernisation Energy use has been reduced through measures including a high-efficiency boiler, energy-efficient kitchen equipment, and changes to maintenance practices such as no longer charging batteries in lockers.
  • Strong School and Youth Engagement Primary school groups are invited around ten times per year to learn about golf, visit the driving range, and receive explanations about course management and greenkeeping as a profession.
  • Broad Social and Community Use Two public paths cross the course, and the facility hosts activities such as bridge clubs, events for elderly people who are lonely, charity events for Ronald McDonald House, and clinics for parents of ill children.
β€œ

β€œIn 2025, Golfbaan Het Rijk van Nijmegen, spanning 150 hectares, will remain one of the largest and most versatile golf courses in the Netherlands. Considerable attention is given to optimisation and sustainability, including the renovation of the irrigation system and the electrification and robotisation of the machinery fleet. The aim is to further reduce the use of pesticides and raw materials and to professionalise management. As an area for improvement, I see the importance of transforming the grass species composition on the greens to more sustainable varieties that have better disease resistance and require fewer fertilisers and other additives. This not only contributes to a further reduction in the use of resources but also to the robustness and future resilience of the course. Alongside ecological measures, social sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Het Rijk van Nijmegen actively seeks cooperation with local authorities, residents, businesses, and charities. Through joint projects and social initiatives, the bond with the local community is strengthened.”
