Notable Observations

  • Biodiversity Projects: The club manages 167 nest boxes (60% occupancy), two fish-free amphibian pools, bee hotels, and mouse riders, significantly supporting local fauna and biodiversity.
  • Tree Management: A comprehensive tree plan includes maintenance of 400 trees every three years, gradual replacement of American oak with native species, and selective thinning to enhance biodiversity.
  • Water Conservation: The club uses computer-controlled, demand-based irrigation, abstracting only 40,000 litres annually from a permitted 150,000 litres and employs timers and efficient plumbing to minimise water usage.
  • Energy Efficiency: Installation of 56 solar panels, LED lighting, and energy-efficient kitchen equipment exemplifies the club’s commitment to reducing energy consumption.
  • Volunteer Engagement: A group of 30 volunteers actively supports maintenance tasks such as weed removal and bird box upkeep, fostering community involvement in sustainability.
  • Collaborations: Partnerships with organisations like the local Bird Working Group and the Municipality of Eindhoven strengthen community ties and enhance environmental management.

In a very small area, something big has been achieved here. In 40 years, an area has changed from monotonous hockey pitches to golfing in nature. Trees occupy a prominent place at De Tongelreep and get all the attention. Looking ahead and taking action is what characterises the group responsible for sustainability. Examples: The construction of wadis to be prepared for extreme precipitation, the purchase of solar panels, and the tree plan. There is a large group of volunteers who support greenkeeping in maintenance and engage in weed-cutting, building bee hotels, constructing mouse riders and tending flower boxes, among other things. The local Bird Working Group De Kempen also contributes to biodiversity by hanging, maintaining and checking nesting boxes. The results are extraordinary: some 60% of the now 167 boxes are occupied. Water and energy consumption is very low and is constantly monitored and assessed. If there are spikes or other trends that are not right, a solution is sought immediately. What could still use attention is sharing with members and visitors to get them to participate more, learn to watch and understand and thus help increase support. One way of doing this is through attention on the website, in the newsletter and information about nature and landscape on the course.
