Sustainable Golf Pledge

We are committed to social and environmental responsibility, in and through golf.

We recognize the importance of playing our part to protect and restore nature, conserve resources, take climate action and strengthen communities.

We will seek to use our reach to raise awareness and positive action amongst golfers, partners and the wider public.

We will make an important difference, and help golf become a valued leader in sustainability.

GEO Certified

Through becoming GEO Certified we have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.  The international certification was earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating our commitment to make sustainability of central importance to our golf facility.  We're proud of our social and environmental value - and looking forward to doing even more on our sustainability journey.

Notable Observations

  • Diverse Habitats and Birdlife Wetlands, native trees, and wildflower areas support 19 bird species, including the Merlin and Oystercatcher. Habitat work is led by the club’s horticulturist.
  • Active Biodiversity Monitoring A long-term ecological plan is in place. The team uses mapping tools and apps to track trees and wildlife, with strong links to local authorities and tree groups.
  • Natural Irrigation Strategy The course is irrigated almost entirely through rainfall and a smart drainage system. CirrusPro software and weather data keep water use minimal and efficient.
  • Powered by Clean Energy Geothermal heating, EV chargers, and electric maintenance equipment reduce emissions. Solar power is being planned for robotic mowers.
  • Strong Waste and Recycling Systems Waste is sorted across the site, with composting via GAJA and safe handling of oils and chemicals. On-course recycling points are in development.
  • Iceland’s Largest Junior Programme 800 kids take part annually, backed by funding from simulator income. The club is nationally recognised for its youth work.
  • Open and Inclusive Culture With over 900 female members and strong beginner pathways, GKG promotes access and inclusivity across all age groups.
  • Local Partnerships and Outreach The club runs school programmes, supports charities, and encourages staff volunteering. A sustainability committee drives ongoing community engagement.

The club is at the outset of its sustainability journey and from discussions with the greenkeeping staff and senior management, it is clear they are very conscious of their sustainability role and future plans. The club has major course redevelopment plans in the pipeline which are likely to come to fruition in the next couple of years.
