Notable Observations

  • Biodiversity Enhancement Through Native Planting: Over 6,000 olive trees have been transplanted and more than 50,000 native plants, shrubs, and flowers have been introduced on the course. These efforts support local habitats, align with the natural Mediterranean landscape, and minimize water requirements.
  • Conservation Efforts for Endangered Species: Costa Navarino Hills conducts ongoing conservation efforts for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle and African chameleon species. This includes regular environmental impact assessments and monitoring, especially around the Gialova Lagoon, a critical wetland habitat.
  • Water Efficiency Through Targeted Irrigation: Water use is carefully managed, with irrigation prioritized for essential playing areas. The Toro computerized irrigation system adjusts in real-time to optimize water distribution based on current needs, helping to conserve water.
  • Comprehensive Recycling and Composting Initiatives: The facility has a robust waste management strategy, including recycling programs and composting. Green waste is converted into wood chips, and compost is used both on the course and in local olive groves, reducing landfill contributions and supporting soil health.
  • Partnerships with Environmental Organizations: Costa Navarino Hills collaborates with groups like the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece and the Navarino Environmental Observatory. These partnerships focus on local conservation and research projects, engaging the community in sustainability efforts.
  • Inclusive Community Engagement Through Tournaments: The course offers tournaments open to all ages and skill levels, encouraging community participation and fostering social connections. This inclusivity promotes both physical and mental wellness through active engagement.

I congratulate TEMES and Navarino Hills for their unwavering commitment to sustainable practices, particularly the ambitious composting project. I look forward to seeing the significant impact it will have on TEMES' goal of minimising organic waste sent to landfill and achieving 100% on-site management of organic waste by 2035. In addition, the proactive measures to preserve the local landscape - including the robust monitoring and protection programme for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and the ongoing project to characterise the population of the critically endangered African chameleon species in the Gialova lagoon - demonstrate a commendable sense of environmental responsibility. The research studies financed by TEMES and donated to the local authorities underline this commitment. It is impressive to see how these initiatives not only enhance the golfing experience, but also play a crucial role in preserving the natural heritage.
