Notable observations

  • Biodiversity Conservation: The golf course spans 120 hectares, integrating native flora such as Laurus azorica and Cryptomeria japonica, providing habitats for migratory birds like the Eurasian curlew. A turf reduction programme converted 1 hectare into low-maintenance natural areas.
  • Wildlife Habitat Enhancement: The course features water bodies that serve as vital stopovers for migratory birds and amphibians. Future plans include creating wildlife sanctuaries and educational signage to raise awareness among golfers.
  • Water Efficiency: Irrigation targets essential playing areas like greens, utilising wetting agents and sprinkler optimisations informed by weather patterns and soil moisture analysis.
  • Wastewater Management: The facility collects wastewater and uses landscaped areas with water-tolerant plants to filter contaminants, with plans to install an oil separator system to improve runoff management.
  • Inclusivity and Accessibility: Partnering with organisations such as ARRISCA and the Cerebral Palsy Association of São Miguel, the course facilitates accessible sports days and adapted golf activities.
  • Community Engagement: Events like the Expresso BPI Golf Cup and Azores Ladies Open foster local engagement and enhance the course’s reputation as a regional hub.

The Batalha Golf Course covers an impressive area of approximately 120 hectares, with 18 hectares of dedicated turf areas, allowing for the incorporation of various natural habitats, contributing to the rich biodiversity of the region. This area not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the course, but also supports local wildlife, making it a vibrant ecosystem. I look forward to seeing how the management continues to balance the turf areas with ecological initiatives, promoting both an enjoyable golfing experience and environmental sustainability.
