• Biodiversity Audit serves as a live baseline A full audit was completed in 2025, giving precise, up-to-date habitat and species knowledge to steer management and teaching on site.
• Meadow zones and woodland structure for wildlife Large areas are intentionally left uncut as meadows, with added trees to build age structure and continuous fauna corridors. This has boosted habitat value while keeping the venue fit for elite coaching.
• Deadwood retained for biodiversity Fallen trees are left in place across the course to create habitat and increase ecological complexity. It’s simple, visible, and teaches best practice to every visitor and trainee.
• Automated range operations Robotic lawn mowers and robotic ball collectors already work on the driving range. This cuts routine fuel use and frees staff for higher-value turf work, while demonstrating modern maintenance to students.
• GPS-controlled sprayer A relatively new GPS sprayer unit minimises inputs through precise, targeted applications. This is a concrete step toward lower chemical use with better control and records.
• Bio-treatment washdown with compostable outputs Equipment is cleaned in a modern unit with impermeable floors and biological treatment that digests oils; organic residues are then composted. This closes loops and shows best-in-class pollution control.
• “First Green” outdoor STEM sessions The course hosts BIGGA First Green activities for local schoolchildren, turning real course features into hands-on lessons in science and ecology.
• National training hub and living lab As Golf Ireland’s Ulster Coaching Academy, the site doubles as a teaching ground for future greenkeepers and managers. Daily use by students and pros puts sustainable methods on show and raises awareness.

“The golf facility, whilst limited in scale, is presented very well. The staff work hard to keep it in excellent condition as it is such an important piece of the Golf Ireland training and coaching programmes, as well as being a key training facility for future greenkeepers. There is a very strong sustainability ethos with respect to fauna and flora, and it was particularly delightful to observe fallen trees left to add to the biodiversity throughout the course area. This is a course that receives the most detailed and intensive scrutiny of any course as it is visited by greenkeepers and professional golfers constantly. It stands up well to this test and I look forward to seeing further development over the course of their sustainability journey.”
