Notable Observations

• Diverse Habitats and River Corridor The site includes extensive conservation grassland, woodland, scrub, wetland and riverine habitats. The River Blackwater runs through the course, with its habitat corridor sensitively managed and regular fish counts undertaken by the Environment Agency.
• Expanding Ecological Grasslands Areas of managed turfgrass have been converted into ecological grasslands based on observed patterns of play, reducing the amount of intensively maintained turf. Woodland understorey is also allowed to develop where possible, creating transitions between grassland and woodland habitats.
• Habitat Features for Wildlife Owl and bat boxes have been installed, while log piles and brushwood piles provide habitat for invertebrates. Standing and fallen deadwood is retained wherever possible, and extensive ecological grasslands provide feeding areas for pollinators.
• Irrigation Without Potable Water Golf course irrigation comes from a large on-site lake fed by piped runoff from a nearby development, supplemented by rainwater collected from parts of the clubhouse roof and car park. This means no groundwater abstraction or potable water is used for irrigation, which is restricted primarily to greens and tees.
• Solar Electricity Generation The clubhouse roof carries 100 solar panels, which generated approximately £20,000 of electricity in 2025. This represented around 10% of the electricity consumed by the large clubhouse and leisure complex.
• Recycling Washdown Water A recently installed Clearwater system treats and recycles water from the maintenance washdown area rather than discharging it. Its multi-stage biological filtration captures grass clippings, oils and chemical residues while allowing the water to be reused.
• A Hub for Healthy Recreation Alongside the main golf course, the facility provides swimming, gym and padel facilities, as well as a nine-hole par-3 course that encourages people taking up golf. The wider leisure complex is an important social hub supporting healthy living in the area.
• Supporting Local Charities Club charity fundraising places particular emphasis on supporting a local charity for young adults with special needs. Benton Hall also hosts annual Essex County Cricket golf days for charity.

“Benton Hall Golf Club is an impressive example of how to manage a golf complex sustainably. The range of different habitat types on the site are well managed, and frame the playing areas well. The River Blackwater flows through the site, and the club manage this important riparian corridor sensitively. The innovative use of an artificial lake for irrigation water, fed by piped water from a nearby development, means that neither groundwater nor potable water is needed for irrigation, a significant benefit in this low rainfall area. Also of note is the array of solar panels on the clubhouse roof, which significantly reduce the amount of electricity drawn from the grid. The range of leisure facilities present on the site, in addition to golf, acts as a valuable social hub as well as making a significant contribution to healthy living activities in the area.”
