Through becoming GEO Certified we have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.  The international certification was earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating our commitment to make sustainability of central importance to our golf facility.  We're proud of our social and environmental value - and looking forward to doing even more on our sustainability journey.

Notable Observations

  • Pools and Islands Created to Boost Biodiversity Over the past two decades, Amsterdam Old Course has created pools and small islands specifically designed to improve biodiversity, and the greenkeeper has recently observed reedling on-site.
  • Strong Knowledge Base Through Long-Term Species Records Species composition and habitats have been thoroughly documented for over 20 years, including a 2019 external report and many observations on http://waarnemingen.nl/
  • Nature Projects and Habitat Features in Unmaintained Areas Unmaintained zones have been enriched with nest boxes and a variety of insect-attracting plant species to increase ecological value within limited space.
  • Very Low Irrigation Use Irrigation use is ~4,800 m³ per year across 3.3 hectares, which the verifier describes as “relatively low”. Irrigation is only applied to essential areas.
  • Significant Building Energy Reduction Energy-saving actions such as LED lighting, automatic shut-off sensors, and replacing old refrigerators have reduced clubhouse energy use by about 35% in recent years.
  • Powered by 100% Green Electricity The club’s electricity contract supplies 100% green energy, verified during the visit.
  • National Monuments Day Participation The club recently took part in National Monuments Day, inviting neighbours to learn about the historic 1935 clubhouse — one of the oldest in the Netherlands.
  • School Lessons Provided by the Teaching Pros Teaching pros give reduced-price lessons to children from local schools, strengthening access to golf for young people.

“The Amsterdam Old Course, established in 1936, showed passion and knowledge to further improve the playing quality and nature value of the course. They also are concerned by the fact that the Amsterdam Municipality has the intention to build several thousand of houses on the location where the course is now situated. I look forward to the actions and final results of these actions, especially as this golfclub is situated in one the most densely populated areas in the Netherlands, and despite this location still has a relatively high nature value a far as I could judge.”
