As the summer days roll on, July is the height of the wildflower season. Our ‘Corn Bunting’ meadow on the Castle course, St Andrews is looking great just now. This is a really ingenious planting method that utilises a small space for maximum diversity.
The wildflowers like the dominant Ox Eye daisy are great feed for bees and butterflies, whilst mixed in amongst the flowers are more agricultural plants such as barley and Borage. This mix of plants means the area has food provision for invertebrates in summer and birds in winter.
It’s a cracking way to support our wildlife if you are pressed for space or time and its also stunning to look at. Worth a try, we lightly rotivated the area and raked over but not too fine and allowed some air pockets for seed infill, seeded the mix and here it is.
