In 2025, as part of our ongoing course development programme, Kinsale Golf Club created two new wetland features on the course in areas that were previously scrubland. These areas are already showing signs of attracting wildlife with the recent arrival of a pair of mallard ducks and a first brood of five ducklings. Frogs are populating the smaller feature, and an upcoming biodiversity audit will help identify what other wildlife is benefitting from these new areas.
The main wetland feature is fed by a small watercourse that helps drain a previously wet surrounding fairways and green areas and has been designed to ensure that water can be retained in the area for most of the year. It has been planted with a variety of grasses and wildflowers that are currently establishing themselves.
This is a great example of how a problem for the club, i.e. winter flooding and poor drainage, has been improved whilst taking the opportunity to create new habitats.
