The composting system at Royal County Down recycles organic waste into nutrient-rich material used across the grounds. It operates in two stages.
Area 1 serves as the initial collection point for leaves, grass, cardboard, paper, cones, twigs, and small plant material, where it remains for approximately six weeks. The heap is turned regularly, with the first major turning at six weeks, followed by daily turning to introduce oxygen, accelerate decomposition, and ensure even heating.
Area 2 receives the partially decomposed material for further breakdown and maturation. During this stage, the compost darkens, develops an earthy texture, and continues processing into a stable, crumbly material free of large pieces.
Once fully matured, the compost is applied to the flower beds in front of the clubhouse, improving soil structure, moisture retention, and root health. This sustainable system supports healthy plant growth and enhances the overall appearance of the club’s grounds.
