As part of the club’s commitment to biodiversity and habitat enhancement, the club was invited by the local council to participate in a log beehive trial designed to support native bee populations.
The initiative aims to provide additional nesting opportunities for solitary and wild bee species, many of which have faced increasing pressure from habitat loss and the decline of suitable nesting sites. A member of the greenkeeping team collected a purpose-built log hive, which was subsequently installed in a secluded area near the 15th hole on the Championship Course.
Constructed from natural timber, the hive replicates the cavities found in deadwood habitats that many native bee species use for nesting. The location was carefully selected for its sheltered conditions, low levels of disturbance, and proximity to flowering plants that provide valuable food resources throughout the season.
By creating suitable nesting habitat, the club hopes to encourage native bee activity and contribute to wider pollinator conservation efforts. The project reflects the club’s commitment to supporting biodiversity and participating in community-led environmental initiatives. The hive will be monitored regularly to assess occupancy and provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of this approach in supporting local bee populations.
