Safeguarding the critically endangered Marsh Pulai

Critically endangered in Singapore, the Marsh Pulai (Alstonia pneumatophora) has fewer than 50 known mature individuals remaining in the wild. Protecting this rare native tree is therefore an important conservation priority, with propagation and reintroduction into suitable habitats playing an important role in supporting the species' long-term survival.

In 2024, The Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) successfully propagated Marsh Pulai and shared seeds and saplings with conservation organisations and industry partners, including Nature Society Singapore, Mandai Wildlife Reserve, the Singapore Botanic Gardens Herbarium, NParks, and other local golf clubs such as Tanah Merah Country Club, Seletar Country Club, and Laguna National Golf Resort Club.

Through the propagation and sharing of rare native flora, SICC is contributing to wider conservation efforts beyond its own grounds. The initiative demonstrates the value of collaboration between golf clubs and conservation organisations in safeguarding threatened species and preserving Singapore's natural heritage.
