Heathland is one of Surrey’s most distinctive yet threatened landscapes, supporting rare birds, reptiles, and insects. Recognising its ecological importance, Sunningdale Golf Club has partnered with Surrey Wildlife Trust, ARC, and Natural England to protect and enhance the habitats across the course. The partnership provides expert guidance on land management, ensuring that restoration efforts benefit wildlife, habitat quality, and the wider environment.
Key work has included selective tree removal and scrub clearance, allowing heather to regenerate while maintaining safe refuges for existing species. Through the gradual restoration of heathland, Sunningdale is creating a diverse mosaic of habitats that support both current and future wildlife populations.
This long-term approach demonstrates how golf courses can play an active role in the conservation of some of Britain’s most threatened landscapes. The collaboration reflects a sustained commitment to safeguarding natural heritage, not only preserving the remaining heathland, but creating new, resilient habitats for generations to come.
