Restoring a lost coastal species

In November 2025, Hayling Golf Club became the first site in mainland UK to reintroduce Cottonweed (Logfia gallica), a rare coastal plant from the daisy family that, until then, was only known to occur in County Wexford, Republic of Ireland.

Andrew Shaw of the British Rare Plants Nursery propagated the species and researched its historic distribution. His work revealed that Cottonweed had first been recorded on Hayling Island in 1621 by the botanist John Goodyer.

This historical evidence supported Hayling Golf Club as the ideal location for its reintroduction, with 200 young plants established along the club's beach frontage and in selected natural areas across the course.
