Recently, Akureyri Golf Club made a significant investment in small, autonomous electric lawnmowers. These mowers are primarily used to maintain the rough on nine of the eighteen holes at Jaðarsvöllur. By switching from large, fossil fuel-powered ride-on mowers to electric robots, the club has achieved cost savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Fuel consumption has dropped by 2,250 liters per year—about 45 refills for a traditional rough mower. This transition has saved the club nearly four thousand Euros annually in fuel costs.

Additionally, the hours previously spent operating mowers, often for entire days, are now being used for other tasks on the course and within the club. This shift allows staff to focus more on activities that directly enhance user satisfaction. The maintenance costs for the new robotic mowers are only about 10–15% of what it costs to maintain the old diesel mowers. The investment in electrical installations for the robot charging stations was just over 10,000 Euros.

The automation efforts don't stop at mowing—the club has also introduced an autonomous ball-collecting machine in the practice area.
