Planting a living legacy for SG60

In celebration of Singapore’s 60th anniversary of independence, SICC launched its SG60 Tree Planting Initiative in 2025, planting 60 native trees across the club grounds. The initiative forms part of SICC’s broader efforts to align its environmental goals with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, while celebrating the nation’s biodiversity and ecological heritage.

At the heart of the initiative is the Changi Tree, a native Singaporean species with significant ecological and cultural importance. Known for its strength and resilience, the species was historically used in construction and gave its name to the Changi district. Once thought to be extinct, it was rediscovered in 2002, making its conservation and re-establishment particularly significant.

Working with a biodiversity recovery programme involving schools and community stakeholders, SICC is supporting the propagation of 300 Changi Tree saplings. As part of this effort, 20 ‘mother trees’ were planted across SICC during July and August 2025, establishing a foundation for future propagation and creating a living legacy of conservation and renewal.

Adding a personal connection to the initiative, members celebrating their 60th birthdays were invited to participate in the planting, bringing together community, conservation, and Singapore’s national heritage in celebration of SG60.
