Opportunities from mistakes, the creation of an ecology pond

Dunbar Golf Club

Scotland

Seepage from a nearby pond to Dunbar Golf Course led to inundation to the side of the 1st green and 18th tees. Rather than installing a drain or electrical pumps to drain the area the greenkeepers took advantage of the situation and created an ecological pond.

Although this pond is in play, 75% is untouched, other than the prevention of further succession, and left to naturalise with local species. This is ideal for creating a variety of habitats within the pond, encouraging a diverse selection of species.
