Royal St David's last year completed a renewal of the irrigation system; the previous 46-year-old system had many leaks in the main pipework and with the old impact heads on many of the tees, the coverage was poor and resulted in lots of wasted water being thrown into the roughs etc.
Now with state-of-the-art sprinklers, water can be accurately delivered onto the playing surfaces with much less wastage. With added irrigation to fairways and walkways now, the ability to keep grass alive with water and wetting agents will minimise the need for extra nutritional inputs of fertiliser at the end of every season to recover drought-stressed areas where turf has died or been severely impacted.
