At Hørsholm Golf, we’ve decided to protect most of our lake edges not only from fertilizers and chemicals but also from mowing—to support wildlife. Starting with the 2025 season, all edges that are not adjacent to greens or directly in play will be preserved.
Historically, we mowed down to the lake edges and marked them with a red line. This red marker is now moved back 10–15 meters from the water’s edge to create protected zones. This change benefits wildlife by giving animals that live in or near the water a place to shelter in the tall grass, away from semi-rough mowers and predators. This adjustment also adds an extra challenge to the game, as the golf rules now classify these areas as penalty zones instead of wetland areas.
Over time, these buffer zones will also help manage larger volumes of water. During very wet periods, we can retain water to ensure a consistent flow during dry spells. This is achieved by raising the overflow in each lake and connecting a smaller outlet to the lake’s natural water level.
