Llanelli green infrastructure study

Machynys Peninsula Golf & Premier Spa

Wales

With large areas of green infrastructure such as the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust alongside our own golf course and with a RAMSAR designated estuary stretching in front of us, it remains important to plan how we can further encourage a better environment in our home town of Llanelli. The University of Wales, Trinity St. Davids approached us to host the start of a student field trip to explore just that.

Our chair, Jim Anderson, hosted the launch of the student study at the golf club. Jim highlighted the huge steps taken to rescue the site from dereliction (Figure 1). Today we host a Site of Special Scientific Interest as well as rare and protected species (Figure 2). The peninsula hosts a rich variety of trees, plants, grasses and reeds, supporting breeding wildfowl, mammals, insects and reptiles. Often, our members swap stories relating to the birds, snakes, voles and other critters spotted that day.

Partners: Llanelli Rotary, Carmarthen County Council, Llanelli Town Council, Bouygues Construction, Foothold Cymru and Ysgol Pen Rhos.
