Hibernacula were constructed alongside the Glenrothes Golf Course wetlands created in 2024 to provide refuge, shelter and overwintering habitat for amphibians, especially toads and newts. The structures were created by digging turfs to make the footprint, stacking logs and branches with openings facing the wetland, covering over with soil, and finally capping with the turfs. Amphibians require access to both aquatic and terrestrial environments during different stages of their life cycle. The structures offer sheltered cavities for overwintering and refuge, while their proximity to the wetland creates opportunities for wildlife to move between breeding, feeding and sheltering habitats.
The construction of the hibernacula was undertaken in partnership with the Fife Amphibian and Reptile Group, a local community organisation, drawing on their knowledge and expertise to support the design and creation of the habitat features. We would like to thank the group and volunteers for a fantastic and productive day, and the opportunity to share knowledge, promote best practice and encourage stewardship of local habitats.
