Puffballs, waxcaps and Pleated Inkcap are among the many different types of fungi found on our links. Here they are pictured 'fruiting' in the autumn months after the land has warmed up through the summer and is damp. Fungi are very important to healthy ecosystems because they feed on decaying organic matter such as leaf litter, soil, dung, wood and dead animals, recycling 85% of the carbon to release nutrients for other organisms.
This project is ongoing by the initiative of two of our members (with help in identification from the North West Fungus Group!) and we hope to increase awareness of the local fungi within the club and further afield.
