Visby Golf Club is the first in Sweden to test virtual fencing for grazing animals on a golf course – an innovation combining technology, nature conservation, and the golf experience.
Using GPS collars on sheep, the club can maintain open landscapes and promote biodiversity without physical fences or heavy machinery. The grazing helps reduce maintenance in hard-to-reach areas, protects sensitive natural features, and keeps the roughs more playable – making it easier to find balls and shortening the time taken to complete a round.
The project is run in collaboration with LRF, RISE, Ammor Farm, Coop, and the Swedish Golf Federation, with research support from SLU. This initiative is part of our ongoing sustainability work and shows how golf courses can serve as living landscapes where technology, ecology, and the joy of the game work together.
