We identified an area alongside a path and sloping bank that was difficult to maintain using machinery and required weekly hand strimming. To reduce maintenance requirements while enhancing biodiversity, the existing turf was removed using a turf cutter and replaced with a diverse wildflower planting.
The new wildflower area has helped frame the course from the adjacent path while providing valuable habitat and food resources for pollinating insects. Since its establishment, we have observed an increase in pollinator activity across the site.
The project has also been well received by members of the public using the course’s path network, many of whom have commented positively on the colour and variety of the wildflowers. To further engage visitors, an interpretation board was installed to highlight the importance of pollinators and the role they play in healthy ecosystems.
This is an initiative that we plan to maintain and expand, creating additional wildflower areas across the course in the coming years.
