At Hørsholm Golf, we have spent considerable energy over the years chipping and removing branch waste. However, in 2022, we decided to experiment by leaving piles of branches in place. Previously, only roots and larger wood pieces were left on the surface, but this time, branches with leaves were also included.
We also planted flowers around the branch piles to attract insects. The experiment has proven to be a great success; the area now attracts not only insects but also birds, mice, and other small animals. Birds have found shelter and are nesting in the large, secluded branch piles. Due to these positive effects, we’ve decided to stop using chippers or removing branch waste. Instead, we have expanded our habitat areas with two additional sections, now covering half a hectare.
