With the help of the greenkeepers, members of Amsterdam Old Course have built artificial kingfisher nesting units as part of the ecology efforts on the golf course.
Over the years, kingfishers, a very fragile species, have been spotted regularly at the golf course. The tunnel nesting systems replicates the burrow the birds usually excavate into sandy soil, They are dug into vertical banks around the kingfisher’s foraging sites: the lakes at the course.
At the same time, steps are taken to make the foraging sites more attractive for kingfishers (clear water, not too much vegetation and thin branches from which the birds attack). We are still waiting for kingfishers breeding at Amsterdam Old Course, but as of 2021 the bird has been spotted more often than before.
