Adelaide is the capital of South Australia – the driest state in the driest inhabited continent. Our average rainfall is 546mm annually. During periods of high rain, our local creek can overflow and flood the nearby airport. We pump excess water from the creek and inject it into an aquifer. This water replenishes the aquifer and provides us with a water source in summer. Last year, we used 180ML of water. This year, we have pumped 120ML into our aquifer which is yet to be used. The water storage ponds are filtered by various native plants. These ponds also provide habitat for local birds, frogs and turtles.
