A model for sustainable tournament delivery

The inaugural LIV Golf Michigan event at The Cardinal at Saint John’s set a new benchmark for environmental stewardship, successfully completing its GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf audit. By integrating sustainability at the heart of the tournament, the event delivered outstanding results in circularity and community support.

A key achievement was the tournament’s commitment to waste diversion. Through a dedicated sorting team, twenty 60 gallon compost toters were filled, diverting 4.2 tons of organic waste from landfill. This effort was further strengthened by material recovery initiatives, including the collection of 12 supersacks of mesh, the largest recovery recorded at any tournament to date.

Beyond environmental performance, community impact remained a central priority. Ten pallets of surplus food, approximately 5 tons, were donated to the Forgotten Harvest, providing more than 7,000 meals to the local community.

Together, these pillars, organic waste diversion, record-breaking recycling, and food security, demonstrate how elite golf can drive meaningful local change. Looking ahead, these foundations ensure that LIV Golf’s presence in Michigan will continue to grow as a model for sustainable international sporting events.
