Golfbaan Het Rijk Van Nunspeet

Adrie van Der Werf, GEOSA, Accredited Verifier Read verifier report. One of the key-features of the Het Rijk van Nunspeet golf course is the combination of a high level of course maintenance with a keen eye on a natural development of the surrounding nature areas and landscape. Drifting sand dunes, once a typical characteristic of this area, have been brought back on this course and heather vegetation is now being restored such that a more gradual and natural transition from playing area to the surrounding woodlands is achieved. Apart from that, the management demonstrated that sustainability is part of their ma…

Nature
Het Rijk van Nunspeet Golf Course is located south-east of the built-up area of Nunspeet. The course borders the A28 on the south side, and is further surrounded by forested areas with buildings. There is a recreational lake on the east side. The golf course was opened for use in 1987 and has 27 competition holes. Within the perimeter of the golf course there are not only the course elements for the game of golf, such as greens, tees and fairways, but there is also a large expanse of more natural areas. The golf course is located high on the northern flank of the deposits of the Veluwe lateral moraine, and this creates many height differences in the golf course. These height differences not only offer extra challenges to the golf players, but also create extra diversity for habitat conditions. The golf course is surrounded by forest and there are also forest stands between the holes on the golf course. These forests are predominantly Scots pine and American oak, with English oak and silver birch in some places. Many forests have a well-developed shrub layer with rowan, alder buckthorn and the exotic American black cherry.
There are many areas of heath and/or impoverished grasslands spread across the course. These are mainly on the edges of the forest stands on slopes, and form a natural transition between the golf course and the forest.
Due to the predominantly east-west position of these strips, there are many south (warm and dry) and north (cool and relatively moist) slopes. This gives the golf course a great variety of microclimates which many plants and animals (can) use. On the steep south-facing slopes there are patches of heath and impoverished grassland rich in different species, including mouse-ear hawkweed, hawkbits and common heather; see figure 5. These impoverished soils already have great value, but this slope definitely has even greater nature potential. This potential can be raised and preserved through management of impoverished areas.

These turfgrasses are optimal for the circumstances at this club because:
In combination with our maintenance schedule and meticulous irrigation system, we are able to provide these grasses an optimal living environment in our grounds on this basis.
This golf facility assesses mowing patterns every: 2 months
This golf facility consults the following individuals / organizations regarding its grassing plan:
- • Alan Rijks
- • Eric Seijn
- • Pro-Grass

This golf facility is making the following efforts to manage the playing quality expectations of customers:
Activity | Description |
---|---|
Establishing clear internal policies for irrigation, fertilization, colour, cutting heights, overseeding etc | Each year, after taking soil samples, we prepare a maintenance plan for the entire course. The plan covers the whole year and is drawn up in months and weeks. |
Promoting the playing quality values of more naturalized turf, particularly fairways and semi-rough | Improvement of soil structure is included in the maintenance plan. Not collecting the grass clippings leaves sufficient natural growth/food on the fairway and semi-rough. |
Promoting the financial benefits of presenting sustainable surfaces | The elements on the course such as uncut rough are mown/clipped once a year. |
Improving customer understanding around greens maintenance | We keep the members informed of major maintenance work to the greens through the clubs website, and if golf players have questions, we are happy to answer them in person. |
Demonstrating the direct relationship between environmental best practice and year round high quality playing surfaces | A good maintenance plan and the right choice of grasses will ensure quality and sustainable management compatibility. |
Conservation & Enhancement
This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve landscape character:
Activity | Description |
---|---|
Allowing seasonal variation of course coloration and texture | On the important sections of the course, such as the tee box, green and pre-green, we ensure a perfect, healthy lawn through fertilisation and customised irrigation. Outside these sections, we allow natural discolouration as much as possible. |
Appropriately matching mowing lines to contours | The contours are in harmony with the environment and the game. |
Protection and restoration of historic features | Not applicable. |
Discreet on-course signage and furniture | We have chosen golf course materials with a natural appearance in a colour and material appropriate for the course. |
Conservation of specimen trees | Not applicable. |
Screening and softening unsightly man-made features | Not applicable. |
This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to improve the landscape ecology of the golf course:
Activity | Description |
---|---|
Minimizing the amount of amenity grass | The grass surface that is intensively mown is kept as small as possible to achieve a suitable course for the game of golf. |
Increasing the size of habitat patches | We try to make habitats as large as possible. |
Connection of internal habitat patches | Not applicable. |
Connection of patches with external habitats | Not applicable. |
Creation of habitat corridors | Not applicable. |
Avoidance of habitat fragmentation | As the rough and the forest edges/areas are maintained as natural as possible, we avoid shredding between the areas. |

Promoting species and structurally diverse woodlands | There are various native shrubs and trees that are preserved through management and maintenance. Furthermore, Buiting has made a Forest Management Plan whereby an area is maintained every three years. |
Establishment of littoral shelves and marginal vegetation in wetland areas | Not applicable. |
Maintenance of an appropriate balance of open water and aquatic vegetation | There is variation in vegetation. The existing ponds are maintained yearly by trimming the sides and keeping them clean. |
Naturalization of linear habitats | Not applicable. |
This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve and enhance biodiversity on the golf course:

Creation of micro-habitats (eg log and stone piles) | We have placed a few piles of tree stumps and various wooded banks around the course. |
Water
In the clubhouse of Het Rijk van Nunspeet, tap water is used in the catering establishment, the changing rooms and at other consumption points.
Surface water is present on the course; this is the buffer for the irrigation system. There are also two springs. The first spring is at the Greenkeepers’ shed on the south side, approximately 160 m deep, and the other spring is at the pond of south 9 and is 180 m deep. Irrigation sprinklers and wetting agents are used to limit the amount of irrigation water. The irrigation is controlled by an irrigation computer. The amount of irrigation water is determined by the experienced head greenkeeper with the assistance of a weather station and moisture measurements. The irrigation pump that is used has frequency control; this sets the speed of the pump. This prevents water from being pumped up unnecessarily, which saves water as well as energy.

The environmental management plan not only seeks to ensure strict compliance with environmental legislation, it also aims to launch a process with a constant focus on the effects of the operations on the environment. In that process of awareness, attention will be given to the most efficient use of raw materials and targeted influence on the generation of waste and the way in which it is processed.
The objective of Het Rijk van Nunspeet Golf Course is to minimise environmental impacts. This should be possible through creating a high degree of awareness among employees, and thus preventing wastage and misuse.
Drawing up measurable criteria, other than the assessment to determine compliance with applicable laws and regulations, could be a useful addition. Routine inspections by the municipality are an additional impetus for complying with the rules.
