Sergio Gomez was the one who got me into golf design in the early 2000´s and we built the brand "Olazabal Design“ together. I still run the studio today with currently five golf course architects on our growing team and I hope Sergio would be proud how it has been developing over the years

GEO Certified Project - Education City

Matthias let Olazabal Design's team for the 18, 9 & 6 hole development of Education City Golf Club together with the studio's lead architect Toni Ortner. The project achieved GEO Certification in 2024 and was one of the initial wave of developments that enrolled in the GEO Development certification process. This is the only GEO Certified Development in Qatar and incorporated a number of clever design techniques and methodologies to ensure it was as sustainable as possible.

Key highlights include:

  • Created native habitats across the golf course that provide an important rest stop for migratory birds, including several rare species.
  • 100% of the irrigation water is sourced from non-potable sources coming from a combination of TSE and rainwater.
  • Created a state-of-the-art training facility as well as three golf courses, making the club accessible to players of all level while growing the game in Qatar.

GEO Certified Project - Torre Comporta

Matthias once again led on the Sergio Garcia design Comporta Torre, this time along with his studio's senior architect Snorri Vilhjalmsson, achieving GEO Certified Development status in 2025. This became Matthias' second certified development. Torre was built on a fabulous piece of land made for golf and immediately reached "World's Best New Golf Course" by World Golf Awards while introducing a number of efficiencies.

Key highlights include:

  • Over 18 ha. of native dune scrub habitat was rehabilitated in the golf landscape areas.
  • No plastic drainage carrier pipe was used across the site.
  • 70% of the construction workforce were Portuguese nationals.
